BCC Wraps Up First Cohort of Paraprofessional Educators Class

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) recently celebrated the graduation of its first-ever cohort of Paraprofessional Educators, also known as "para educators."    Six participants completed the six-week program in late November, with three already securing employment in local educational institutions and the remaining three awaiting responses to their applications.   Three of the graduates successfully passed the ParaPro final exam, earning the industry-recognized ParaPro credential.   "It's always exciting when a new program debuts at BCC, but it's even more exciting when that program is such a success right out of the

Pittsfield Appoints In-House Solicitor, COA Director

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The City Council appointed two leadership positions on Tuesday, bringing legal services in-house and a new face to the senior center.

Following Stephen Pagnotta's retirement, the city has hired Devon Grierson as the in-house City Solicitor for legal matters.   Jennifer Reynolds was also appointed as the director of the Council on Aging/Senior Center.

Both will begin work in early January.

"I am proud to say that we are going to have an in-house, full-time city solicitor," Mayor Peter Marchetti said.

For the past several years, the city has been under a contract with Donovan O'Connor & Dodig LLP for city solicitor services.  Over

Hoffmann Bird Club Hosts Annual Christmas Bird Count

Free Eagles Band Holiday Concert

Santa Claus to visit Greylock Federal Credit Union

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Greylock Federal Credit Union announced a special visit from Santa Claus 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Community Empowerment Center located inside the Kellogg Street branch.

Attendees do not need to be a member to attend this event, it is free and open to the public.

Community members are invited to bring their children to the center for a free picture with Santa. Each guest will receive a complimentary 4x6 photo.

In addition to photos with Santa, there will be treats for the kids.

BCC's Paterson Recreation Complex Welcomes Community Memberships

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —Berkshire Community College's Paterson Recreation Complex welcomes members of the Berkshire community to join. Lanesborough Residents Want Old Williamstown Road Barricades Gone

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Residents want the now-barricaded Old Williamstown Road reopened for pedestrian access.

Patty Barnaby, who lives on the road, started a Change.org petition that has garnered nearly 440 signatures. On Monday, she and other residents went before the Select Board, which will vote on a path forward on Dec. 30.

Barnaby explained that although the old Route 7 has been closed to vehicles for more than 40 years, pedestrians, horseback riders, bicycles, etc., use it. At the beginning of November, the state blocked it with jersey barriers.

Pittsfield Council OKs Berkshire Carousel Committee

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council has voted to create a committee that handles the Berkshire Carousel offer — but not without debate on procedural details.

Last month, a conveyance and donation of the $267,000 property owned by James Shulman came to the council.  A 2025 operational model and budget put forward by the donors costs about $61,000 annually and brings in the same amount of money, with a $25,000 income from rides alone if they cost one dollar.

Guided Hike at Mahanna Cobble

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A guided hike through Mahanna Cobble in Lenox and Pittsfield will take place on Sunday, Derc. 15, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.    The three-mile moderate to difficult hike will be led by Naturalist and Tamarack Hollow Director Aimee Gelinas, M.Ed. Participants will observe local flora, including trees, evergreens, and ferns, as well as signs of wildlife such as tracks.   The hike is free, with donations accepted. If snow is present, attendees are advised to bring snowshoes or rent a pair for $5.   This program is supported by a grant from the Lenox Cultural Council, with additional sponsorship from the Berkshire Natural Resources Council.

Man Sentenced to State Prison After 2022 North Adams Drug Offense

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nichols Melendez, 33 of Springfield, was sentenced in Berkshire Superior Court to seven to nine years in state prison.   On Monday, Dec. 2 Melendez pleaded guilty to six charges related to drug distribution and illegal firearm possession.   According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, On March 15, 2022, the North Adams Police Department executed a search warrant of 64 Charles Street, North Adams. The search was conducted based on previous investigation a suspected large-scale drug distribution involving Melendez.    There were four people in the Charles Street residence during the search including Melendez and Troy Dupras.
