State, United Way Announce New Partnership

BOSTON — Emergency Assistance Director General Scott Rice announced a partnership between the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay to support overnight safety-net shelter for families and pregnant individuals with no alternative shelter options.    As the state's emergency shelter system reaches capacity, the partnership will create a $5 million grant program, administered by the United Way, to provide funding to community-based organizations, faith-based groups, and volunteer organizations to stand up short-term, overnight shelter sites.    "Massachusetts is in a new phase of managing our emergency shelter system, and we

Man Stabbed at Pittsfield Bar on Thanksgiving Eve

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A man stabbed in a local bar Thanksgiving eve is expected to survive after showing up at Berkshire Medical Center's emergency room.

Police and ambulance responded to the report of the stabbing at Thistle and Mirth at 46 West St. at about 9:40 p.m.

A large number of patrons were exiting the bar and ramen restaurant when police arrived and, according to Lt. John Mazzeo, they found evidence of the stabbing but not the victim. 

The man, who was not identified, arrived at BMC shortly afterward.

Thanksgiving at the Berkshire Dream Center

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — There will be a Thanksgiving meal at the Dream Center on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23.   A full restaurant-style meal will be served in the dining room from 4:30-5:30 pm. There will be a take-out hour from 6:00-7:00 pm.   There will be live music and homemade pies.   The Berkshire Dream Center is located at 475 Tyler St.   The Dream Center anticipates serving more than 300 people. They thanked Biggins Diggins and Canyon Ranch for helping cook all of the turkeys.

Zebra Mussel eDNA Detection in Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Zebra mussel eDNA has been detected at Onota Lake by the Commonwealth's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).    This discovery was made as part of regular monitoring of the lake for these types of invasive species. This detection only impacts boating operations at the lake and has no impact to other recreational uses of the lake.   Zebra mussels are invasive freshwater mollusks that present a variety of ecological, recreational, and economic concerns. BCC Celebrates Free Tuition Program for Nursing Students

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Health-care students without a prior degree are getting a boost from the state through the Community College Nursing Scholarship Program.

This news was celebrated in Berkshire Community College's SIM lab on Monday with legislators, students, and staff. College President Ellen Kennedy explained that the new program allows students to attend nursing and pre-nursing programs for free.

Thanksgiving Angels Descend with Meal Kits for Residents

Berkshire United Way President Thomas Bernard and state Sen. Paul Mark. United Way gave administrative support to the Thanksgiving Angels this year; the senator was in charge of handling the turkeys for pickup. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Upwards of 2,000 families will have their tables filled by the Thanksgiving Angels this year.

For more than a decade, dozens of religious and community organizations have worked together to create free meal kits for those who would otherwise go without. These include everything needed for a Thanksgiving spread — even the turkey.
