PHS Dean Arrested on Federal Drug ChargesStaff Reports, iBerkshires

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield High School's dean of students has been placed on administrative leave after a federal drug arrest on Wednesday morning.
Lavante Wiggins was one of two city men arrested and charged by the U.S. Attorney's Office for allegedly conspiring to traffic large quantities of cocaine in Western Massachusetts. Wiggins was arrested at his East Street home.
Superintendent Joseph Curtis promptly sent a communication to staff and parents addressing the arrest. He said the district was informed by the U.S. Attorney's Office about the arrest of Wiggins and he has been placed on administrative leave effective immediately.

STOW, Mass. — After two recent fires that spread from chimneys to the surrounding structures, Holland Fire Chief James Gagne, Holyoke Fire Chief John Kadlewicz, and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine are reminding residents that having their chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned can help reduce the risk of one of the season's most common types of fires. The fires took place on Island Road in Holland on Nov. 24 and on Lynch Drive in Holyoke on Nov. 28. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at either event. DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Water Commissioners agreed at its recent meeting to participate in a Central Berkshire and Hill Towns Emergency Medical Services regionalization study. The study would provide information and be a "very helpful guide" to the future of EMS services and would not commit the district to any future changes, resident Dr. Thomas Irwin said during several meetings. DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted to have mail-in ballots available for the Feb. 3 special election to fill its vacant seat if more than one candidate is on the ballot. So far, two residents have taken out papers to run for the vacant seat — Richard Haley and Robert Collins. Eighty-three years ago on Dec. 7, Japanese planes struck the naval base and airfield at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and sparked the nation's entrance into World War II. Every year, the Berkshire Veterans Coalition and the city remember those who lost their lives during the attack with a ceremony and tree lighting at the Veterans Memorial Park.
