Dalton Select Board Discusses Updating Alcohol and Drug Policy By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board continued its discussion on updating the town's Alcohol and Drug Policy during its meeting last week. Since the legalization of marijuana the town has to navigate how it wants to update its drug policy taking into consideration federal guidelines, exposure type, and medical and recreational use. The town's current policy was written prior to the legalization so it is unclear what to do in cases where the presence of cannabis shows up positive in an employee or during the pre employment physical examination. The field at Clapp was named for the late coach years ago. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A local baseball legend is now immortalized at Clapp Park with a plaque marking his memorial field.
Family, friends, and trainees of George "Buddy" Pellerin gathered at the West Housatonic Street ballfield on Saturday for the unveiling.
Parks Commissioner and former player Cliff Nilan said there wasn't a day when Pellerin didn't give coaching a thought. He joked that if they passed kids playing baseball on the side of the road, the late coach would drop everything and teach them how to throw.

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Noah Kane-Smalls hit the game-winning shot in overtime Sunday to lead Mount Greylock to a 65-64 win over Hoosac Valley in the Northern Berkshire Sports Academy fall high school basketball league. Kane-Smalls finished with a double-double, scoring 25 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Desmond Cobb also had a double-double for the Mounties with 24 points and 13 boards. Ward Bianchi scored 11 points, and Nolan Barnes grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. Hoosac Valley was led by Trevor Moynihan with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city-wide general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, for the office of Mayor, City Clerk, Councilor-At-Large, all Ward Councilors, and School Committee. There will also be one non-binding question on the ballot. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, is the deadline to register to vote or to make changes to voter registration. To be eligible to vote in the Nov. 7, 2023 general election, residents of the City of Pittsfield must be properly registered by the deadline. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Traffic Commission on Thursday approved a number of speed and collision-reducing measures to increase safety.
One of which was a petition to look into speeding, the speed limit, and signage on Cloverdale Street.
Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey said that people have sped down the rural road, even before it was repaved, and a person's dog was struck. Residents are not asking for the road to be changed but would like a speed limit sign.
The statutory speed limit is 30 MPH and City Engineer Tyler Shedd said that they could post a digital sign that warns people to slow down when they are above it.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Jeep Wrangler flipped over in the Coltsville intersection on Sunday after being struck by a police cruiser. The Jeep's occupants and an officer were taken to Berkshire Medical Center with minor injuries. Officer Matthew Ahern was trying to maneuver through the intersection on his way to a reported disturbance on Cheshire Road when the accident occurred, according to Lt. Marc Maddalena. Ahern was using lights and intermittent sirens as he drove north from Merrill Road into the intersection, Maddalena wrote in a press release. PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College (BCC) reports an increase in students from 1,367 in 2022 to 1,601 in 2023, representing an increase of 17.1 percent--the largest percent increase in students since the institution started tracking this metric in 1991. The last time BCC experienced an increase of this magnitude was 2009, when the number of students increased by 14.3 percent For matriculated students, BCC reported an increase from 1,079 in 2022 to 1,173 in 2023, an 8.7 percent increase.
