DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board accepted a Medication Education and Disposal grant for the Police Department during its meeting last month. The grant in the amount of $1,300 will help cover the cost of collecting and disposing of unwanted household medicine. The department has had the unwanted medication dropbox for many years, Police Chief Deanna Strout said in an interview. Following the closing of Casella's incinerator, like many departments in the surrounding areas, Dalton struggled to find a way to dispose of these medications.  DALTON, Mass. -- Avery Lane and Gianna Witek Monday combined on a two-hitter to send the Greylock Thunder Black to the championship game of the Berkshire County Fast Pitch Softball League 12-and-under division. The Thunder beat Dalton, 8-1, at Chamberlain Park to earn a date against Adams-Cheshire-Savoy Swat, an 18-17 winner over the Berkshire Force Black on Monday in Adams. The Thunder and ACS will play on Tuesady at 5:45 at Albert Reid Field for the county's summer championship. Monday's semi-final in Dalton was dominated by pitching. Yondr pouches lock digital devices so they can't be used during school. DALTON, Mass. — The Central Berkshire Regional School Committee is still mulling over introducing Yondr pouches to its middle and high schools. The goal of the policy change is to help students be more engaged in school and to prevent students from taking videos of their peers without permission and spreading them around, the school committee said during its June meeting. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City officials believe it's time to update regulations on illuminated signage in response to advancements in technology. Permitting coordinator Amber Spring told the Zoning Board of Appeals last week that the Ordinance Review Committee would like its input on the city's sign ordinance. The request is part of the review of the charter that the committee started last year.

Hikers are invited to mark that day exactly 173 years ago on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 9 a.m. with a literary walk to read local poet William Cullen Bryant's "Monument Mountain" with the Berkshire County Historical Society. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) has added a new associate in science degree in Natural & Physical Sciences (NPS), available beginning in the fall 2023 semester. The NPS program was developed as an opportunity to offer students studying the sciences an associate in science degree that included meta-major style pathways in biology, biotechnology, chemistry and physics. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On July 28, 2023 at approximately 10:35 pm, the Pittsfield Police Dept., Pittsfield Fire Dept. and Action Ambulance responded to the area of 1292 North St for a head-on motor vehicle crash with injuries. A 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck was traveling south bound on North Street in the 1200 block when it collided with a 2019 Nissan Rogue which had been traveling north bound, also in the 1200 block. The driver of the Chevrolet Pick Up Truck was transported to Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) with non-life threatening injuries. DALTON, Mass. — A parent and community leader called out the Central Berkshire Regional School District for how it handles the safety and wellness of students. Joseph Diver, chair of the Select Board, said he was speaking as a resident at Thursday's School Committee meeting. He expressed his disappointment on how bullying incidents are reported and how the district handled recent anti-Semitic harassment that led to a teacher's resignation.  LEE, Mass. -- Lee's Maguire Roosa and Glendale's Morgan Windram-Geddes were the top finishers Sunday at the High Lawn Farm Keep Moo’ving 5K. The event was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the family-owned dairy farm and as a benefit for Berkshire Bounty, a food rescue organization that serves emergency food distribution programs county-wide. Roosa hit the finish line in 19 minutes, 30.45 seconds, a 6:16 mile pace, to edge runner-up Pat McNaughton (19:31.87) by just more than a second.  DALTON, Mass. — The Community Recreation Association is kicking off its countdown to its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 5, with a birthday party on the lawn. The organization has been an integral part of the community since 1916 but its first brick and mortar building was constructed in 1922 with funds willed by W. Murray Crane. The association opened where it stands today, 400 Main St., on Nov. 9, 1923. CRA officials wanted to celebrate the centennial outdoors on the memorial lawn so did not want to wait until November for a ceremony. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter has announced its closing after housing the community’s stray animals for many years.
On Saturday, the no-kill shelter’s board members announced the news on social media. They are looking at Aug. 31 as an official closing date.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors of the Friends of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is announcing that we have made the decision to close the facility,” the post read.
