Dalton Ladder Truck Delayed

DALTON, Mass. — The delivery of the Fire District's new ladder truck has been delayed again and is now expected to be delivered by August.   While being refurbished at Northern Fire Equipment, it was determined that the truck's Detroit Diesel ECM, which controls the fuel injection, is "shot," interim Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski said.    The replacement part costs $2,700, but will be covered by Northern Fire Equipment.    Northern Fire Equipment Vice President Michael Burke has also agreed to add a USB-A/USB-C outlet to the dashboard at no charge, Czerwinski said.    The bodywork is almost complete and the interior work is expected

Recent Rainfall Lifts Massachusetts Out of Drought

BOSTON – Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper declared drought conditions return to normal following above-normal rainfall for the month of June.    All seven regions are at a Level 0-Normal Conditions, including the Western and Cape Cod Regions, which were previously declared at a Level-1 Mild Drought. Governor Awards Grants to Eliminate Barriers To Employment

ANDOVER, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $3.5 million new Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grants for seven initiatives across the state.

The grants, funded through the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund (WCTF) and distributed by the Commonwealth Corporation, aim to increase access to well-paying jobs for residents facing employment barriers and improve the competitive stature of Massachusetts businesses by enhancing worker skills and productivity.

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Local lawmakers and the cultural leaders on Friday called for the inclusion of people of all abilities in the creative economy.

The proposed Accessibility in the Creative Economy Act would would provide grants to organizations focused on arts, culture, humanities, and interpretive sciences that remove barriers for people with disabilities.

Governor Announces Grants to Reduce Transportation Sector Emissions

BCC Massage Therapy Students Volunteer at Community Events

Mass Destruction 16Us Bow Out of Eastern Championship

SALISBURY, Md. – The Ohio Energy Alderman 16-and-under softball team Friday scored four runs in the last two innings to take a 7-3 win that eliminated the Mass Destruction from the USSSA Eastern Championship.   The Destruction came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to twice tie the game.   Nevaeh Lopez and Natalie Arnhold each had two hits, including a triple, for the Destruction, which collected six hits.   Amanda Pou went 5 and two-thirds innings in the circle, striking out three, walking one and not allowing an earned run.   The Destruction went 5-3-1 at the tournament.

Berkshire Humane Society Has Plenty of Pets Seeking Homes

Skipper is an energetic year-old hound mix who would love to have some older kids to play with. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With more than 140 animals currently at the Berkshire Human Society, there is a furry friend for everyone looking to adopt.

The shelter has 144 animals looking for new homes, down from more than 160 at its recent peak. These include dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and a bird with different personalities and life stories.

And Berkshire Humane needs to find these animals homes because there are even more waiting to enter the shelter.

Corporate earnings results for Google and Meta helped push the averages higher this week, while Microsoft results were somewhat disappointing. The net result was higher stock prices for many sectors of the markets.   The most interesting change that I perceived in the overall markets this week was the FOMC's lack of impact on financial markets. Over the past year, these monthly two-day Fed events were market-moving. Investors parsed every word of every sentence in the meeting notes and spent hours and even days interpreting every answer that Chair Jay Powell uttered in the Q&A session.   This week, the Fed raised Fed fund rates yet again to a 22-year high at 5.25 percent.

Pittsfield Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile Virus for Second Time

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Friday July 28, 2023, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a second result of West Nile Virus in weekly samples of mosquitoes collected by the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project in the City of Pittsfield.    The sample was taken in the vicinity of Elm Street and Williams Street. There is no current confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in the City of Pittsfield.   Residents are encouraged to continue taking personal protective measures to avoid bites such as: When outdoors, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and socks.
