Berkshire United Way Announces Award Recipients, Honors Supporters

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — More than 100 guests joined Berkshire United Way at Bousquet Mountain Lodge last week to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy and to honor Rosemary and Larry Harnett, longtime Berkshire United Way supporters, with the Ruth P. and Nicholas Boraski Leaders in Philanthropy Award.   The event also announced Berkshire United Way's 2023-2024 grant award recipients. With the support of more than 3,000 donors, Berkshire United Way awarded just more than $1 million in grants to 28 organizations, including five new first-time grant

Pittsfield Man Held on Home Invasion Charge

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city man is being charged in a home invasion that occurred Sunday night in the 400 block of Tyler Street.    Jada Lopez, 21, is in custody and additional charges maybe forthcoming. Police say this is not believed to have been a random act, and as such there is no immediate threat to the public.   Police were called to the Tyler Street residence just before 7 p.m. on Sunday for a report of a man holding a woman hostage at gunpoint. Investigators say a man had broken into the home and threatened a resident with a large knife.   Shortly after officers' arrival, they observed a suspect fleeing from the home and quickly took him into custody.

Pittsfield's Robitaille Places Second at National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Taconic High School graduate Andrew Robitaille Saturday placed second in the under-18 boys diviison of the U.S. Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships.   Robitaille rolled a 181 in the championship match to finish just behind Sunbury, Ohio's, Aidan Furukawa, who rolled a 197.   The two were the last bowlers standing after five long days of bowling that started with 1,313 bowlers in the qualifying round.   Robitaille placed eighth in that 1,300 bowler field, rolling a 288 game on the way to a four-game series of 928.   That great start helped Robitaille spend the week well in contention for one of the 188 bowlers who would advance to

3 Certified Mayoral Candidates in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Friday was the last day to submit nomination papers to the Registrar of Voters. 

So far there are currently three certified mayoral candidates and races in multiple wards.

John Krol has joined the list of certified mayoral candidates and will go up against Peter Marchetti and Karen Kalinowsky in a preliminary election on Sept. 19. The two top vote-getters will move on to the general election on Nov. 7.

Krol is a former city councilor and Marchetti and Kalinowsky are current city councilors.

Craig Gaetani and David Webber had also taken out papers for mayor but were not certified as of Thursday.

ROCHESTER, N.H. -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars Sunday beat Stamford, Conn., 10-5, to win their pool and clinch a spot in the New England Regional semi-finals.   Sebastien Herrera, Sam Gyurjan and Robby Bazinet each had two hits for Pittsfield, which jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back in finishing pool play with a record of 3-0.   Bazinet also threw two scoreless innings for Pittsfield, which spread the pitching load over five different arms.   Mason Daley went 2 and two-thirds innings on the bump, allowing two hits and one run.   By virtue of the win, Pittsfield gets Monday off and awaits the winner of one of

Irish Dance School Performed in Ballina, Ireland

Students with teacher Jennifer Darby, right.  PITTSFIELD,  Mass. — With the help of community donations, Irish dance school Scoil Rince Bréifne Ó Ruairc gave its students the opportunity to perform in Pittsfield's Sister City Ballina, Ireland.    The Irish American Club of Berkshire County opened the school in 2021 under the direction of Jennifer Darby.   The school offers "high-quality traditional Irish dance" classes to children and adults in Pittsfield. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke on Friday at the Ralph Froio Senior Center of her legislative efforts to aid residents 65 years and older.

To a crowded common room, Warren expressed gratitude for the residents' willingness to kick off the weekend by mulling important issues that the commonwealth and wider nation face.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Quentin Christopher and Jack Abel each had three hits Friday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Stars to a 14-1 win over Lyndon, Vt., in the opening game of the New England Regional Championship at Deming Park.   It was a red-letter day for the Pittsfield Babe Ruth program, as its three all-star teams went 3-0 in regional competitions across New England.   Both singled in seven-run first inning for Pittsfield, which also saw the team get hits from Ethan O’Donnell and Jack Farkas.   Christopher, Abel and Gavin O’Donnell hit three straight singles in a four-run rally in the third to help put the game out of reach.   Jay
