The facts are that retail theft is a drag on the U.S. economy. Organized retail theft, smash-and-grab robberies, carjacking, and cargo pilferage are just some of the crimes committed hour by hour throughout the country. Estimates of costs vary but are well above $100 billion per year. There is no definitive source that calculates the actual dollar cost of stealing, but several organizations such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Retail Federation have provided guesstimates. The Chamber believes organized retail crime has cost the economy more than $125.7 billion. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are investigating a July 4 hit and run that left a woman severly injured. According to a police report, on July 4, 2023, at approximately 10:03 P.M., the Pittsfield Police Department, Pittsfield Fire Department and County Ambulance, were dispatched to the area of 194 Second St for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle, which had left the scene. As a result of the initial investigation, it was determined that a southbound Ford F-150 pickup, being operated by 65 year old Jeffrey Miles, of Pittsfield, struck 33 year old Shaquanna Turnage, also of Pittsfield, as she was walking southbound in the roadway. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Supreme Judicial Court has ruled that residents can be rude to elected officials during open microphone. This comes with mixed feelings from city councilors.
Last month, the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee unanimously approved an amendment to its rules that follows the SJC's decision that regulating the substance of public commenters is "unconstitutional."
This includes the use of hate speech.
Pittsfield's rules largely conform with the exception of a sentence that states a speaker shall refrain from any personal attacks. City Solicitor Stephen Pagnotta revised it to state that the public comment period should be conducted in an orderly

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Work and Family Mobility Act, which went into effect on July 1, provides hope and a sense of ease for immigrants across the commonwealth.
This week, community leaders were staged outside of the Registry of Motor Vehicles providing assistance and support after the act made it possible for residents to apply for a standard class D or M driver's license regardless of immigration status.
"I summarize it as hope for people that things can get better," activist Clemente Sajquiy said on Monday. "They are going to be finally able to drive freely without being afraid of being pulled over and their cars being taken from them."

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development has announced the return of the Parks Playground Program at three city parks this summer. The Summer Playground Program offers a variety of recreation activities to Pittsfield children ages 6 to 13 at no cost. Playground Leaders create safe, supervised and fun-filled environments with activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and nature activities. The program begins Monday, July 10 and runs through Friday, August 18. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is seeing increased interest in this year's election and with just a few weeks until signatures are due, many candidates have been certified.
As of late last week, new faces have taken out papers for the mayoral and at-large, Ward 2 and Ward 6 council races.
There are now five parties interested in replacing Mayor Linda Tyer, who announced that she will not be seeking re-election earlier this year.
David Webber has taken out papers for mayor, joining John Krol, Craig Gaetani, Karen Kalinowsky, and Peter Marchetti on the list. Not much can be found on the new candidate from public records.

DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission has decided to participate in the upcoming Dalton Day event on Saturday, July 15. The commission will be selling Fitch-Hoose House tiles, bandanas, books and Dalton bicentennial plates, keychains, bracelets, fans and magnets. Due to staffing issues, the historic Fitch-Hoose House Museum, on 6 Gulf Road, will be closed that day although a sign will encourage potential museumgoers to attend Dalton Day. The commissioners hope the event will provide more exposure to the 177-year-old two-story house to encourage more visitors.
