Thunderstorms to Close out the Week

With warmer temperatures and high humidity this weekend, expect some thunderstorms.

Thursday, June 22 should be mostly pleasant with a high of 77. Sunshine will give way to clouds and some possible showers this afternoon, according to Accuweather.

Expect similar temperatures Friday but with more clouds. A light shower can be expected in the afternoon. Showers will continue on and off throughout the night. There is a chance scattered thunderstorms.

On Saturday, June 24 you can anticipate showers and a thunderstorm in the morning becoming more widespread as the day continues, according to the Weather Channel. The same can be expected Sunday so batten down the hatches.

BCC Alumni Night at the Pittsfield Suns

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) will hold an Alumni Night on Saturday, July 15 at the Pittsfield Suns game.    All BCC alums receive free admission to the game, held at Wahconah Park, located at 105 Wahconah St, Pittsfield. The Suns will face the Westfield Starfires.    The game kicks off at 6 pm with the National Anthem, sung by a BCC alum. There will also be a first pitch raffle.    BCC alumni also receive buy one, get one free admission for the entire Suns season.

Pittsfield Parks Commission Approves Draft MOU for Springside Pump Track

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — More than a year after the approval of a bike skills facility in Springside Park, the Parks Commission has approved a draft memorandum of understanding with its purveyors.

The New England Mountain Bike Association plans to place a bicycle skills park and pump track near the north playground of the park at no cost to the city.  

Since late 2021, Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath and Commissioner Anthony DeMartino have been negotiating an MOU with NEMBA. The draft will go back to the organization, which can decide whether to accept or reject the terms.

Retired Pittsfield Fire Chief Steps in for Dalton

DALTON, Mass. — Robert Czerwinski has agreed to serve as the interim fire chief for Dalton.    The retired Pittsfield fire chief started his first day on the job Tuesday and has agreed to serve for 90 days until the district can fill the permanent position.    "He's very knowledgeable and I think he's a very good leader. I think he'll do us a really solid job doing some reorganization and keeping us moving forward," Fire District Chair JamesDriscoll said.   Although the district does not think it will need to extend Czerwinski's contract, there is an option to do so at the end of the 90 days.    "If we feel that

ADAMS, Mass. – Berkshire Arts and Technology (BArT) Charter Public School is currently accepting applications for students in grades 6 through 10 for the 2022-2023 school year.

Lanesborough Returns Incumbents to Office

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters returned both incumbents in the only two races on the town election ballot on Tuesday.    Michael Murphy was elected to a second term on the Select Board with 172 votes; Barbara Davis-Hassan polled 142 votes and Deborah Maynard 131.    Murphy said earlier on Tuesday that he was feeling "cautiously optimistic" about the election though there were good candidates running against him. Dalton Talks Zoning Bylaw Over Pub Parking Lot

DALTON, Mass. — A change in signage seems to have quelled neighbors' ire over errant parking and excessive noise by Zinky's Pub patrons.    Since pub owner Bill Zink purchased and installed six new "no parking" signs in the adjacent residential parking lot things have improved, Deborah Merry, who filed a complaint with the town, told the Select Board last week.    The board had referred the complaint to town counsel to see if there were any legal violations that need to be addressed with the pub's liquor license.   Since the signs were installed, Merry said she no longer hears or sees the patrons and the "last few weeks, it's

Crosby Academy Students Read Poems on North Street

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — At Hotel on North on Friday, June 23 at noon, nine Crosby Educational Academy fifth- graders will celebrate their graduation with a poetry reading of original work and the unveiling of 60 poetry tree tags on North Street.    "Writing poetry has been such an empowering experience for our students. County Youth Soccer League Wraps Up Spring Season

Closure of Holmes Road bridge While Repairs Are Underway

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will begin repair on the Holmes Road bridge starting on June 23, 2023.    During this work, the Holmes Road bridge, between 650 and 677 Holmes Road, will be closed. No thru traffic will be allowed.   The city recommends that drivers seek alternate routes. Traffic traveling southbound on Holmes Road will be detoured towards Pomeroy Avenue, Crofut Street and then to Route 7/20. Pittsfield Educators Push for Stricter Phone Policy

The use of Yondr pockets came up during the discussion. These pockets use a lock similar to inventory tags on clothing items. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Staff in the public schools say phone use is out of control and they want a policy to address it.  

Educators cited issues with excessive phone use disrupting education, social and emotional health, and safety during last Wednesday's School Committee meeting. Chair William Cameron agreed that it is an urgent issue and is placing it on the next meeting agenda.
