Pom Pom Gnome Making Workshop

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Common Room at Zion Lutheran Church closes its "Summer Camp Crafts" series in The Common Room at Zion Lutheran Church.    On Aug. 6, from 5:15 to 6:30 PM, local craft enthusiast Barb Landry will guide attendees through the creation of Pom Pom Gnome making.   This workshop is free and open to all ages.

Pittsfield's Sibaritas Restaurant Moving Downtown

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After three years in business on East Street, Sibaritas is moving downtown.

On Monday, the Licensing Board approved a new annual downtown all-alcohol restaurant license for the eatery's new location in the former Trattoria Rustica at 27 McKay St.

"I couldn't be happier for you," board member Jon Lifergren said. "I think it's a win-win move and I'm really excited about it."

Other board members agreed and Chair Thomas Campoli coined the East Street operation as a "wild success."

Megan and Ronald Gomez opened the Italian restaurant with a Chilean flare in 2021 in the former Elizabeth's Restaurant at 1264 East

Subcommittee Mulls Pittsfield Schools' Cell Phone Policy

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  A school official drifted into a "chicken or the egg?" direction regarding the negative implications of cell phones during a policy meeting. 

"I understand where the cell phone mental health issue is coming from and I do think a lot of it is social media driven," said School Committee member William Garrity, who is two years out of high school.

"As a person who now uses social media, it's just awful and I think that's where a lot of it comes from but I also know I have friends with mental health issues who don't really use social media and so I had this thought, nowadays, more mental health problems are more

Lanesborough Village Fire/Water Receives $1M State Boost

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Fire and Water District received a $1 million boost from the state for a new drinking water well on Bull Hill Road.

While the project is expected to cost as much as $8 million, this will allow planners to gather enough information to make an informed decision about moving forward with additional permitting, design, and construction, legal consultant Mark Siegars told iBerkshires in an email.

New Springside Pond on the Horizon

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The long-awaited rehabilitation of Springside Pond has begun and is expected to wrap up in the fall.

Construction vehicles and piles of materials can be seen on the southern portion of the 237-acre park next to the pavilion. Plans include sediment removal, dam repair, and increased accessibility.

"Really since year 2000, the city has been thinking about the restoration of Springside Pond," Park, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath told the Parks Commission last year.

Berkshire Force 12-Year-Olds' Run Ends at World Series

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The Berkshire Force 12-and-under travel softball team ended its run at the Babe Ruth World Series the way it began: with a game against Davidson, N.C.   Unfortunately for the Force, the second meeting went the other way as Davidson earned a 12-6 win on Tuesday to elimninate the Force in the tournament's consolation "Diamond Bracket."   Davidson scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a tie game after the Force battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to tie the game twice.   Berkshire scored four runs in the bottom of the third to get within a run and tied it when Kaylana Altman singled and scored in the fourth to make it

DALTON, Mass. -- Emma Wixsom Tuesday threw two shutout innings to lift the Berkshire Force 10-and-under softball team to a 16-7 win over Dalton and a Berkshire County Summer Softball League Championship at Chamberlain Park.   Wixsom struck out eight hitters in the game, which ended after four innings due to the time limit.   She allowed just one hit and stranded three runners over the final two innings after giving up five runs in the first.   "She came in hot late, and that's exactly what we needed at the time," Force coach Tom DiPietro said. Berkshire Public Water Suppliers Awarded Grants

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced more than $17.4 million in grant awards to 21 public water suppliers to assist with long-term solutions that address and mitigate emerging contaminants in drinking water.    The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) selected 21 projects to help remove PFAS and manganese.   Berkshire County Awardees:   Housatonic Water Works Company – $350,000  The Housatonic Water Works Company in Great Barrington plans to construct a new treatment facility to remove manganese from the drinking water source at Long Pond. Berkshire Nursing Families Awarded Perinatal Health Grant

BOSTON — The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation today announced $360,000 in new grant funding to support 12 organizations working to improve perinatal health across the Commonwealth, including supporting access to doula care for pregnant people in communities of color.   Berkshire Nursing Families will use the grant to support the next phase of its partnership with Springfield Family Doulas to train and mentor Black doulas and lactation counselors in Berkshire County.    The Perinatal Health Initiative grant program is part of the Foundation's broader strategy of grantmaking and policy analysis aimed at better understanding and disrupting structural

Pittsfield Proposes a Deputy Public Works Commissioner

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is looking to add another leadership position to the public works department.

The Personnel Review Board on Monday supported the creation of a deputy commissioner in the Department of Public Services and Utilities. The full-time position, if approved by the City Council, will have a Grade M-8 pay scale with a yearly salary ranging from $89,247 to $116,021.

This position would assist Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales.

Berkshire Force Drops into Consolation Bracket at World Series

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The Kinston, N.C., 12-and-under softball team Monday scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to finish off a 15-5, four-inning win over the Berkshire Force in the quarter-finals of the Babe Ruth World Series.   Kinston moves on to Tuesday evening's semi-final round at the Florence SportsPlex.   The Force, which fell to 3-3 in the tournament, moves into the World Series' Diamond Bracket.
