Lanesborough Public Safety Committee May Offer Three Facility ProposalsBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Based on public feedback, the Public Safety Building Committee is looking to offer residents three possible scenarios for a new facility.
These include just a police station, a combined police and emergency medical services complex, and a complete facility with police, EMS, and the Fire Department.
Chair Mark Siegars has doubts about the addition of the Fire Department into the proposals, as the town rejected a $6 million police and EMS proposal earlier this year and adding fire would significantly increase the cost, but residents have expressed an interest in it.

DALTON, Mass.—The Historical Commission is still navigating how to reissue the book "Down Memory Lane." The book is a compilation of weekly columns by the Rev. Franklin L. "Cap" Couch that appeared in the now defunct Dalton News Record from 1972 to 1977. In 2006 the publisher, the nonprofit Berkshire Family History Association, compiled the columns from newspaper so the commission is unsure if it can republish it. The book that Commissioner Bonnie Eastwood has does not have a copyright page. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district will soon use a tiered cell phone policy that grants more freedom as grades progress.
Last week, the School Committee accepted a cell phone response plan after administrators were tasked with reviewing Pittsfield Public School's policy on the devices. It will go into play for the new school year that starts next week.
Superintendent Joseph Curtis agreed to return in about a month with an update on the implementation and include updates in his monthly report.
"Teachers and educators have seen an increase in students distracted by phones in the classroom," Deputy Superintendent Marisa Mendoza said.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council OKed multiple orders for a state project last week to improve the vehicle and pedestrian ways near Berkshire Medical Center.
The state Department of Transportation is planning an overhaul of the corridor that includes the conversion of North Street between Tyler Street and Stoddard Avenue into one-way southbound traffic, a roundabout, bike lanes and shared-use paths, and new sidewalks.
Five orders of takings for intersection and signal improvements at First Street and North Street were approved. The total amount identified for permanent and temporary takings is $397,200, with $200,000 allocated by the council and the additional monies

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city man was found guilty on Wednesday on drug and firearms charges. A jury in Berkshire Superior Court convicted Jason McFadden, 43, on counts including illegal possession of a large capacity weapon and a firearm, possession of those weapons during commission of a felony, improper storage of firearms, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Possession of a large capacity firearm during the commission of a felony carries with it a potential sentence of life in prison, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Union negotiations will continue at General Dynamics Mission Systems after a proposal was rejected by workers earlier this month.
A couple of weeks ago, the IUE-CWA Local 81255 membership voted not to accept a package negotiated between IUE-CWA and General Dynamics representatives.
Business agent James Mole reported that it was due to wages and benefits and that a strong majority of the membership voted "no."
Members are hoping to go back into negotiations later this week, as the union's five-year contract expires on Aug. 27.
There is no strike planned.

Debbie Storie is congratulated by the Select Board on Monday. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Baker's Golf Center has been recognized for its long history of providing recreational fun to the town and beyond.
The Select Board presented owner Debbie Storie with a plaque on Monday to commemorate the golf center's 80-year anniversary.
"You do so much for our community," Chairman Michael Murphy said.
"Baker's Golf, staff, you yourself personally. So much for our community. This is just a small token of our appreciation in the hopes that you will continue to do this for another 80 years."

DALTON, Mass. — The Water Department has been working with Tighe & Bond on collecting data for the Lead Service Line Inventory Project. The engineering consultants have been building a database using the GIS (Geographical Information System) and developed a mailer that will be sent to water customers, Water Superintendent Bob Benlien said. Customers will be able to take a photo of their service line coming in and using a QR code they will be able to submit it along with information so the Water Department can get that information from their houses. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Should public safety officials have to live in Pittsfield? Voters will have a chance to answer on the upcoming ballot.
Last week, the City Council voted to place a question on the Nov. 7 ballot that asks if the residency requirement for public safety management positions should be eliminated.
It passed 7-4 with Councilors at Large Peter White and Earl Persip III, Ward 3 Councilor Kevin Sherman, and Ward 7 Councilor Anthony Maffuccio in opposition.
The petitioner, Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren, leans toward keeping the residency requirement but wants voter input on the topic. It has been city policy since at least 1947.
