Newest Submarine Christened USS Massachusetts

WASHINGTON — The Navy christened one of its newest Virginia-class fast-attack submarines, the future USS Massachusetts (SSN 798), during a ceremony on Saturday at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Va.   In a time-honored Navy tradition, the submarine's sponsor, Sheryl Sandberg, christened the boat by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow. Pittsfield Subcommittee Looks at Noise Ordinance's Effectiveness

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Residents believe that the city's noise control regulations are thorough — they just need better enforcement.

Last week, a number of community members attended the Public Health and Safety subcommittee to air grievances on audio disruptions and asked for the police to amp up citations.

The panel referred the matter to the full City Council and requested that the city comply with its noise control code, continue and step up its response to violations, and redirect resources to address it.

"We all want the same thing," Ward 3 Councilor Kevin Sherman said. "We all want safe streets and health."

Dalton Fire District's $3M Goes to Voters on Tuesday

DALTON, Mass. — The Fire District voters will be asked to approve nearly $3 million in spending articles at Tuesday's annual meeting.    The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.at the Stationery Factory.   The 22 articles on the warrant amount to $2,950,182, a $253,728 increase from the previous year.    The funds raised by taxation would amount to $1,063,582. The remaining costs would be covered by transfers from other accounts like the overlay and free cash and revenues raised by the department including fees and ambulance.    The commissioner and treasurer are requesting that voters approve various money items, Articles 2 through 7, amounting to

Craneville Elementary Evacuated After Smoke Fills Building

Parents line up to be reunited with their children at the Stationery Factory, the school's emergency location.  DALTON, Mass. — Pupils at Craneville Elementary School were evacuated from the school on Monday after two motors in the heating and ventilation system burnt out and sent smoke through the building.   According to a message to parents from Superintendent of Schools Leslie Blake-Davis, staff noticed an odor at about 10:45 a.m. that "warranted a fire drill."   "It has been recommended by emergency personnel that students and staff relocate to the Stationary Factory (this is our emergency relocation site) to allow emergency personnel to

Pittsfield's Striking Out Cancer Event Back for Third Year

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Area baseball and softball players ages 13 and up are encouraged to participate in the third annual Striking Out Cancer in the Berkshires Event on Saturday, June 24.   The day-long baseball and women's softball games will be played at Clapp Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.   A $10 donation gets you the opportunity to participate in the event. All proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.   Participants will receive a T-shirt to commemorate the event.   Joe DiCicco started Striking Out Cancer as a daylong baseball game in 2021 in memory of his wife. Dalton Man Seriously Injured After Head-On Collision

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Dalton man, John Cicchetti, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after an early morning car accident Sunday.    On May 7, 2023, at approximately 5:00 A.M., the Pittsfield Police Dept., Pittsfield Fire Dept. and Action Ambulance responded to 1050 Dalton Ave for a report of a head-on collision between two vehicles.   A 2013 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Cameron Taylor-Boland, 28 years of age of Dalton, appeared to be traveling eastbound on Dalton Ave when he collided with a 2013 Toyota Camry operated by John Cicchetti, 78 years of age, who was traveling west bound.   Both individuals were the only occupants of their respective

Pittsfield: Temporary New Traffic Pattern on Fenn St.

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— A temporary new traffic pattern will be in place on Fenn  Street, between Allen Street and First Street, beginning on Monday, May 8 due to underground  utility work conducted by Eversource.     This work is expected to continue over the next several weeks. While this work is underway, we encourage drivers to seek alternate routes and follow the designated detour signs.     Traffic travelling from North Street will be detoured to Allen Street or to Renne Avenue. Pittsfield Council to See $205M FY24 Budget Proposal

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2024 is almost $17,000,000, or 8.9 percent higher, than the previous year at  $188,822,018.

On Tuesday's City Council meeting agenda is an order to raise and appropriate a total of $205,634,497 for the FY24 budget beginning July 1. This begins the council's process of departmental spending deliberations with a budget adoption before the new fiscal year begins.

Mayor Linda Tyer is proposing the use of $1 million in free cash to lower the tax rate. 

The total budget also an enterprise total of $18,195,586, with $6,199,738 for DPU water treatment, $1,002,156 for sewer, and $10,993,692 for DPU

Crane Paper Museum Seeking New Location

DALTON, Mass. — The Crane Museum is looking for a new home to house its extensive collection gathered over the last hundred years.   When Crane NXT separated from Crane Holdings, it upgraded all of its security operations, Crane Currency Global Marketing Director Tod Niedeck said.    The museum is located at 32 Pioneer St. in an ivy-covered stone structure dating from 1844 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. MassDOT Berkshire County Temporary Closures

HINSDALE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will temporarily close Middlefield Road (SkylineTrail) in Hinsdale and Peru.    A temporary detour will be in place from Monday, May 8, to Friday, May 12, and motorists will be redirected to take Route 8 (South Street) to Route 143 to Creamery Road.    The closure and detour are needed to facilitate paving operations over the newly installed culverts as part of the project to reconstruct the Skyline Trail (Middlefield Road).   MassDOT is also conducting bridge repairs and guard rail repairs in the evening and overnight hours the week of May 8 on I-90 in Montgomery, Russsell, Becket,
