Berkshire Planning Commission Budget Up 16% for FY24

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission's proposed budget has increased by more than $886,000, or about 16.4 percent, largely due to several new grants.

On Thursday, the Finance Committee OK'd a proposed $6,266,015 budget for fiscal 2024, which is $866,431 higher than this year. It will go to the full commission for final approval.

Treasurer Buck Donovan said that, as usual, the ask is detailed and done very well by staff.

He pointed out that there is a jump in compensation and vacation leave from around $150,000 to around $190,000 because the organization has more employees with bigger salaries.

Voters passed all 26 articles at Monday's annual town meeting at Wahconah Regional High School. DALTON, Mass. — Voters approved all 26 articles on the warrant at the annual town meeting on Monday night at Wahconah Regional High School.   Exactly 99 voters attended the two-hour meeting to approve the budget and various spending items for town equipment, repairs and green initiatives.    The town budget of $21,501,716 is an increase of $1,023,197, or 5 percent, over this year; the assessment to the Central Berkshire Regional School District of $17,505,621 is up 2.27 percent, and includes operating costs of $8,752,286, transportation at $312,385, and capital

Bikers Stand Out for Safe Cycling in Pittsfield

Berkshire Bike Path Council President Margie Cohen talks about the new bill that calls for motor vehicles to give cyclists room on the road. The bill also requires bike lights, which will be available on First Friday.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Around 20 cyclists departed from Park Square on Monday in celebration of Bay State Bike Month.

Nicholas Russo of Pittsfield Community Design Center said the bicycle enthusiasts are glad to see the city's efforts in supporting multimodal transportation including complete streets efforts on North Street and the Bike Facilities Master Plan.

Lanesborough Creates New Public Safety Building Committee

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Select Board has established a new committee to try to solve its public safety building needs.

The nine-member panel replaces the former Police Station Building Committee that resigned after a nearly $6 million proposal for a combined police and ambulance facility was shot down by voters at a special town meeting in March.

Wahconah Regional High School Gets a Preschool

DALTON, Mass. — Wahconah Regional High School will get one of the preschool programs operated in the Central Berkshire Regional School District.    Kittredge Elementary School in Hinsdale runs two classrooms and the second program is operated out of Becket Washington School. They are tuition programs.    The School Committee made the decision to relocate one of the Kittredge classrooms after a lengthy discussion on Thursday.    The move will address feedback that the district has received from community members regarding accessibility and will provide more internship opportunities to Wahconah students.    The district's preschool program is

Fire Marshal Names New Fire Safety Division Director

Dalton Town Hall Work Progressing; July Completion Projected

DALTON, Mass. — There was a "minor glitch" in the work being done on Town Hall that has since been rectified.   Building Grounds Superintendent Patrick Pettit told the Select Board last week that he noticed  the abatement contractor missed a 3 1/2 by 8-foot section of plaster wall in the opera house. The wall had been under plastic.   After some investigation, it was determined the project supervisor at the start of the job had left for personal reasons. When a supervisor leaves, mistakes like this can happen because the incoming supervisor did not see it, Pettit said.     A construction meeting was held with all the contractors to come up

Governor Names Fish and Game Commissioner

BOSTON — Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper announced the appointment of Tom O'Shea to the role of Commissioner of the Department of Fish and Game (DFG).    DFG works to preserve the state's natural resources and protect and manage marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and the habitats that support them.
