LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters will not be able to cast ballots early by mail but can they can still request an absentee ballot for the town election.
Last week, Clerk Ruth Knysh asked the Select Board to opt out of early voting by mail for municipal elections. Her request came after the state expanded access last year.
"An act passed to allow early voting by mail for local elections. It used to be just state and federal," she said. "So my thought on that is it's not in my budget, it's a lot of extra work added on me. I'm only one person in there."
Knysh explained that all of the mail-in ballots would have to be opened and processed by herself

MassWildlife offers opportunities for children to help with the stocking during school vacation week. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The wind blew a sharp chill through the air Wednesday afternoon but that did not stop the annual spring trout stocking at Onota Lake. More than 75 community members enthusiastically released 600 rainbow trout, hailing from the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife's McLaughlin Hatchery in Belchertown. Children leaped in the air as they waited in line for their white buckets to be filled with trout ranging in size from about a foot to up to 18 inches. DALTON, Mass. — Multiple residents attended last week's Select Board meeting to register complaints about Zinky's Pub on Daly Avenue. A resident filed a complaint saying the pub is often over capacity, causing dangerous conditions for the residents who live in that area. The board voted to refer this complaint to its legal counsel KP Law to review and see what within the complaint is a licensing violation and if a public hearing should be held. About 20 students will be accepted into the fall 2023 cohort. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Saturday's word of the day was "safety" at the Ashuwilliticook Rail Trail as two organizations partnered to distribute hundreds of free helmets in honor of National Brain Injury Awareness Month.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment on Brown Street just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the side of the building. Car 2 requested a second alarm calling engine 1 engine 6 and the Hinsdale Rehab unit. Engine 2 attacked the main body of the fire while other units deployed handlines for the interior. Heavy fire was encountered n the first, second floor, and attic. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An increase in bilingual proficiency compensation and a diversity, equity, and inclusion ambassador program was approved during last week's City Council meeting — but not without debate.
The council voted to amend the bilingual proficiency ordinance by $50, as city employees have seen a great need for translation services while communicating with residents.
The proposed increase would compensate an extra $175 a month for oral or reading/written fluency and $225 a month for oral and written fluency. Originally approved in 2020, the ordinance offered an extra $125 a month for either oral or reading/written fluency, or $175 for both oral and written

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters determined a dryer caused a fire in a Preston Ave. home Sunday. There were no injuries, and there was smoke and fire damage on the home's first floor. The fire was deemed to be accidental. Firefighters responded to a reported fire in the basement of a Preston Ave. home. Upon arrival, the Engine 6 crew found heavy smoke coming from the basement and first floor of the home. They found heavy fire in the basement near the washer and dryer that had spread across the ceilings and walls. Firefighters worked for about 40 minutes to get the fire under control.
