Pittsfield Announces Ashuwillticook Rail Trail Pavement Repair

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Please be advised that a section of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail north of Crane Avenue will be closed for pavement repair on Thursday, Nov. 14 and Friday, Nov. 15.   There will be no access to the trail from the Crane Ave trailhead while this work is underway.   While the trailhead will remain open at the Mall Road, there will be no southerly access to Crane Avenue. The Merrill Road section of the trail will remain open.

Dalton Select Board Delays Special Election Decision

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board on Tuesday voted to delay any action on setting a special election to fill its vacant seat until the town confirms that proper legal procedures were followed.   The board was shown a citizen petition with 237 signatures from residents calling for a special election and an election timeline created by Town Clerk Heather Hunt based on office activity levels.   Hunt recommended having the special election no earlier than Jan. 27, Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson said. Hunt was not present during the meeting.    An election should not be scheduled too early in January because the office will be busy with the census and dog license

Pittsfield Veteran Turns 102

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city resident and veteran was recognized this week as he closes in on his 102 birthday this month.

On Tuesday, Anthony "Tony" Salatino Jr. was honored during the City Council meeting for this impressive milestone. He was born on Nov. 27, 1922, in Polia, Calabria, Italy, and came to Pittsfield in 1937 with his older brother to join their father.

Governor Announces Grant Opportunities for Fire Safety Education

Pittsfield Updates Old Container Pickup Schedule

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — As pickup of the old trash and recycling containers started this week, the city shares the following updates:   Casella originally planned to pick up all old containers every day for each route this week. However, due to the varying sizes and large quantity of old containers being placed at the curb, Casella needs additional time for pick up.   Casella will continue to pick up old containers this week for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday routes but may not make it to every household on the route. Pittsfield Tax Rates Down But Values Mean Increased Bills

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The city's tax rates have gone down but rising property values will increase most bills.  

On Tuesday, the City Council approved a residential tax rate of $17.94 per $1,000 of valuation and a commercial, industrial, and personal property tax rate of $37.96 per $1,000 of valuation.

The fiscal year 2025 rate is 51 cents lower than the previous year but the average tax bill for a single-family home valued at $295,291 will increase by $354.51 annually. Last year, the same home was worth $267,914.

Of the 11,328 single-family homes, 568 will see a decrease, 1,687 will see an increase of less than $100, and 3,777 will see an increase less than the

BRPC Releases Draft Safe Travel and Equity Plan for Streets

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With the help of federal and state funds, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission is trying to make streets safe and equitable for all modes of transportation.

Last week, a draft action plan was released for the Safe Travel and Equity Plan for our Streets (STEPS.) The long-term project aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in traffic and non-modal accidents.

Community members gathered at the Berkshire Innovation Center and virtually for a public meeting on the effort on Thursday.

Pittsfield Seeks Proposals for Human Services Funding

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield announced that applications are now available for funding to public service agencies to provide human service programs to benefit Pittsfield residents.    Funding is for the program year beginning July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.   Annually, the City undertakes a process through its Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC), an 11 member volunteer committee, which reviews the proposals and submits its recommendations to the Mayor.    Last year's recommendations resulted in 21 human service programs receiving a total of $206,250 from the City general fund and from the federal Community Development Block Grant
