Pittsfield Council OKs Bilingual Pay Increase, Diversity Ambassador ProgramBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An increase in bilingual proficiency compensation and a diversity, equity, and inclusion ambassador program was approved during last week's City Council meeting — but not without debate.
The council voted to amend the bilingual proficiency ordinance by $50, as city employees have seen a great need for translation services while communicating with residents.
The proposed increase would compensate an extra $175 a month for oral or reading/written fluency and $225 a month for oral and written fluency. Originally approved in 2020, the ordinance offered an extra $125 a month for either oral or reading/written fluency, or $175 for both oral and written

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters determined a dryer caused a fire in a Preston Ave. home Sunday. There were no injuries, and there was smoke and fire damage on the home's first floor. The fire was deemed to be accidental. Firefighters responded to a reported fire in the basement of a Preston Ave. home. Upon arrival, the Engine 6 crew found heavy smoke coming from the basement and first floor of the home. They found heavy fire in the basement near the washer and dryer that had spread across the ceilings and walls. Firefighters worked for about 40 minutes to get the fire under control. PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College (BCC) is now accepting submissions for its annual Daniel Dillon '62 Heart of Service Alumni Award, created in 2021 in remembrance of Daniel Dillon. A 1962 BCC graduate, Dillon was known for caring deeply about his community. He succumbed to COVID-19 in January 2021. BCC and the BCC Alumni Association Board, together with Dillon's family, created the award to honor a BCC alumnus, former student or current student who has shown dedication to and made an impact on the community through service to others. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With only a draft spending plan and a short turnaround from the budget workshop, the School Committee has continued informal budget conversation to guide the administration on its final ask.
Members participated in a budget workshops last week, digging into various line items for more than two hours. The committee is expected to adopt a budget on April 26 and have a joint meeting with the City Council no later than June 1.

Peter Haviland during his time in Vietnam. BREWSTER, Mass. — Peter Haviland served his country in the Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 as a specialist fourth class. Born in Cambridge, he went to college for a while after graduating high school, then decided to volunteer for the draft. "College wasn't working out so I decided to enlist," he remembered. He went to Fort Dix, N.J., for basic training then was sent to Fort Polk, La., for Infantry Training.
