3 Found Guilty in Asiyanna Jones Murder

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Three people have been convicted on charges related to the 2017 murder of Asiyanna Jones.   After a week and a half trial in Berkshire Superior Court, the jury returned guilty verdicts against Gary Linen, Carey Pilot, and Elizabeth Perez for the Oct. 2, 2017, shooting on Dewey Avenue.    The jury found Linen guilty of murder, Pilot of manslaughter, and Perez for misleading police in the homicide investigation. BCHS Presents Holiday Lights At Arrowhead

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society will offer a free virtual tour of Herman Melville's historic Arrowhead on Dec. 21 at 5:30 pm.    Herman Melville celebrated Christmas at Arrowhead in the late nineteenth century, a time that gave rise to new Victorian holiday traditions such as tree decorating, gift giving, Santa Claus, greeting cards, stockings by the fire, church activities and family-oriented days of feasting and fun.    This special tour recreates some of this splendor on with a special virtual evening tour of Arrowhead decorated as it might have been during the Melville family's residence. Emergency Planning Committee Notes Staffing Challenges

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County sheriff's office is working with the state in an attempt to resolve some of the staffing shortages for emergency personnel exacerbated by lack of funding.    At the most recent Central Berkshire Regional Emergency Planning Committee, Lt. Col. Thomas Grady, assistant deputy superintendent at the sheriff, noted that there are five public safety answering points in the county along with the sheriff's 911 countywide dispatch center.   Dalton, Great Barrington, North Adams, Pittsfield and Williamstown operate their own call centers.   "Everybody else is competing for the same group of people and it becomes that same

Pittsfield CPA Committee Deems Eight Projects Eligible

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Community Preservation Committee on Monday approved eight fiscal 2023 eligibility applications but two did not make the cut.

The total ask of around $709,000 includes historic preservation, open space and recreation, and community housing projects.

The last reported CPA budget for FY23 was a little over $809,000 and was expected to increase by $20,000 to $30,000 based on actuals from the tax collector and from the state surplus.  

Berkshire Theatre Group's $125,150 for exterior repairs to the historic Colonial Theatre was taken out of cycle and deemed eligible. The theater is a regular CPA applicant and the panel members observed that theater may

Northern Berkshires Could See Over a Foot of Snow

The U.S. The National Weather Service has declared a snow emergency in effect from 4 pm Thursday, Dec. 15, to Saturday, Dec. 17, at 10 am, in Northern Berkshire County and in Bennington and Western Windham Counties in Vermont.   The U.S. The National Weather Service predicts heavy snow with an accumulation of up to 12 to 18 inches in the Northern Berkshires and the higher elevations of the Green Mountains.   Travel could be difficult to impossible.   Accuweather only predicts between 4-8 inches of snow falling in the Northern Berkshires, with the bulk of the snowfall happening overnight Thursday and throughout Friday.    Greylock Snow Day concurs that there is the

Pittsfield Council Queries Superintendent on Fumes Evacuation Incident

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The emergency dismissal of the city's two high schools last month because of floor refinishing fumes was because of a miscommunication, said superintendent of schools.   On Tuesday, city councilors expressed displeasure with how the school district handled it, quizzing Superintendent Joseph Curtis on the matter.   "My phone rang zero times about tax rate, multiple times about the gym floors," Councilor at Large Earl Persip III said.   And Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowksy said the excuses "sounds like a blame game and no one took ownership."    Pittsfield and Taconic High were evacuated before noon on Nov. 18
