By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
01:41PM / Tuesday, November 05, 2024
DALTON, Mass. — There is uncertainty surrounding implications accessory dwelling units will have on the water and sewer rates.    The town does not currently have any ADUs built yet, but one has recently been permitted. The town passed its ADU bylaw in 2022, which had been in development since October 2020.    It is unclear if the topic of how the town would set its sewer rates was discussed during the bylaws development. The tax collector does not have any rates for this type of housing.    On Aug. 6, the state updated its law to allow AUDs without local zoning approval if they meet certain requirements. This state law would not go into effect until

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
12:25PM / Monday, November 04, 2024

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two more Pittsfield homes have been condemned.

The Board of Health voted Wednesday to condemn 86 John St. and 224 Fourth St. It came with a pang of sadness about demolishing homes during a housing crisis and a conversation about prevention.

"I would think many years ago this property had flowers in front of it," Chair Roberta Elliott said about the John Street home. "It was not like this."

Another member said it feels like capital punishment to the properties.

Both homes have no owner or heir who wants to take responsibility for them. The city has 43 open condemnation orders — about 20 residential.

STOW, Mass. — The National Weather Service issued another Red Flag warning for all of Massachusetts, continuing a weather trend that has contributed to an unprecedented spike in outdoor fires across the state.

In Massachusetts, an average of 15 wildland fires are reported each October. This year, the month’s total capped at about 200 – an increase of about 1,200 percent over the average, and higher than the monthly numbers usually seen in the traditional early spring brush fire season. Of these fires, 100 were reported over the last seven days, and preliminary information indicates that all of them started with human activity.

By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
05:18AM / Monday, November 04, 2024
DALTON, Mass. — After navigating regulations that complicated the town's attempts to sell the Bardin property, the town is nearly rid of it.    During last week's Select Board meeting, members signed the property's deed to Thomas and Esther Balardini for $150,000.     This is the only offer for the property the state Department of Agricultural Resources received.    The 148 acres of land, which consist of three parcels, came into the town's possession in 2016 in a taking for delinquent taxes. The town first placed a lien against the property in 2009.   Town meeting voted in 2022 in favor of selling the land rather than leasing

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:49PM / Sunday, November 03, 2024

— Jane Swift (@janemswift) November 1, 2024

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Those who oppose the removal of MCAS as a graduation requirement fear it will stunt accountability while supporters feel it bogs students down.    Voters will decide Tuesday if students must pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test to earn a high school diploma.
