PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield and the Pittsfield Police Department announced that the following parking and traffic restrictions will be in place for the 4th of July Parade to be held on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 10 A.M. The Parade route will run from South Street at East and West Housatonic Streets, north to Wahconah Street at Wahconah Park. Adjacent side streets will be utilized for staging and disembarking. Restricted Parking signs will be placed on the entire parade route and throughout the staging area on Wednesday evening, July 3, 2024. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) will offer free community college to all Massachusetts residents without a bachelor's degree starting this fall after Governor Maura Healey signed the Massachusetts FY25 budge. A new program called MassEducate will offer tuition- and fee- free community college to all Massachusetts residents, regardless of age, who have yet to earn a bachelor's degree. The budget also includes a continuation of funding for MassReconnect, which provides free community college for all Massachusetts residents over the age of 25 without an associate degree.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — For William "Bill" Sturgeon, being the grand marshal of the historic Fourth of July parade "means everything." Meanwhile, it's a bittersweet time for Mayor Peter Marchetti, who's stepping down as parade leader after more than two decades.
During Pittsfield Community Television's "Parade in Preview" program, it was revealed that Sturgeon didn't believe Marchetti when he first got the call. He initially said, "yeah right" in disbelief.
"It means everything," he said. "I remember the only time I missed the parade, I didn't live here. I never missed it. If it snowed I'd be there.

DALTON, Mass. — The Central Berkshire Regional School Committee agreed to start an education campaign after the proposed regional agreement failed in three of the district's seven towns. The item failed during the Hinsdale annual town meeting on May 15, the Peru town meeting on June 1, and Cummington's special town meeting on June 7. The regional agreement needed six out of the seven towns to vote in favor of passing. Until an updated agreement is approved, the school district will continue to operate under its current agreement and follow state law. Colby Robb doubled, Simon Mele went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Ethan O'Donnell drove in four runs in a nine-hit attack for Post 68. Ethan O'Donnell and Robb split time on the mound. Haddad's 'charity mobile' is decked out with logos of organizations the dealership has supported. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An $8,000 boost from Haddad Subaru sparked canine and human smiles at the Berkshire Humane Society on Friday.
The sizable donation is a result of the dealership's 2023 Share the Love event, which has raised more than $130,000 for the shelter in eight years of being a beneficiary. In partnership with Subaru of America, the dealership donates a fraction of service tickets and car sales during November and December.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Savoy teen was arraigned on murder charges Monday in the June 14 shooting of two men on North Street. Deakan Sayers, 18, charged in Pittsfield District Court with two counts each of armed assault with the intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (firearm) and single counts of carrying a loaded firearm without a license and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. Police officers were dispatched just after 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14, to the area of North Street at Bradford Street for a reported shooting. STOW, Mass. — Every year in Massachusetts, illegal fireworks cause fires, explosions, property damage, and serious injuries. As we enter the weeks around July 4, when more than 60 percent of these incidents occur, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine is reminding residents and visitors to leave fireworks to the professionals. Architect Salvatore Canciello goes over the new numbers with the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee last week. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The proposed reconstruction of historic Wahconah Park has been trimmed by $2 million.
"We do have a budget issue," architect Salvatore Canciello told the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee on Thursday.
The panel has recommended a move from the schematic design to the design development phase for a $28.4 million rebuild of the grandstand and parking lot. Through value engineering, S3 Design was able to shave almost $2 million off the original $30 million price tag — half of the savings goal.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The finance subcommittee recently OK'd a $280,000 transfer to the Department of Public Services for winter maintenance overages with the understanding that the ask may be higher when it goes to the full City Council.
The account is permitted to operate a deficit and has overspent $781,220. At the time of the request, $501,220 was recovered and the $280,000 will address the rest, with $200,000 coming from the Fire Department and $80,000 from the building maintenance department.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire Health Systems 4th of July 5K start time has been moved to 9 a.m., the Berkshire Running Center announced on social media on Saturday. The organizer of the annual road race said that the time was changed by half an hour in order to accommodate parade road closures. On Sunday morning, the center said that 904 runners were signed up for the 5-kilometer race through downtown Pittsfield, including runners from five different countries and 22 states.
