Dropping Temps, Boiler Repairs Close PHSBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass.—Just days before the school gets a temporary boiler, Pittsfield High will be closed for two days due to dropping temperatures causing discomfort inside the building.
Around noon on Tuesday, Superintendent Joseph Curtis announced that the school would have to close on Wednesday, Oct.16, and Thursday, Oct. 17 due to uncomfortable indoor temperatures.
State inspectors cannot look at the new temporary boiler until Thursday. The school is amid a heating system replacement, as the former boilers exceeded their useful life.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With the fall season underway and cooler temperatures expected, the City of Pittsfield's Building Maintenance Department has begun the annual process of winterization at parks throughout the city. The process includes both water and power shut-off at park facilities, which also includes splash pads, bathrooms and water sprinklers, through the fall and winter seasons. Deming Park, Belanger Youth Athletic Facility, and Doyle Softball Complex currently have athletic programs underway and will be winterized in late October. Executive Director Chris McLaughlin reflects on the agency's growth over the past half century. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Elder Services of Berkshire County has assisted the aging local population for 50 years, growing exponentially from its roots with three employees on Wendell Avenue.
Hundreds gathered at the Country Club of Pittsfield on Friday for the agency's annual meeting. "We have been very busy since the last time we got together and we have a lot to celebrate ...  DALTON, Mass. – The annual CRA Just for Kicks Soccer Tournament this year named the 7th/8th grade divisions of the tournament the Dan McMahon division in recognition of McMahon’s impact on youth soccer in Berkshire County over his 35 year career at the CRA. McMahon was the creator of the Just for Kicks Tournament 27 years ago and came to present the winners of the divisions, the McMahon Cup. More than 70 teams competed in eight divisions over the course of two days on the holiday weekend at Wahconah Regional High School and Nessacus Middle School. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The town would only see about $60,000 in USDA grants for the proposed public safety building but could finance it through a loan with the federal department.
Last month, the Select Board voted to work with RCAP Solutions as a consultant in the financing application for the U.S. Department of Agriculture funding. This will have to be formalized in a community service agreement.
"My help is writing the entire application for you for free," representative Madison Wellman explained, as the USDA funds non-government organizations like RCAP Solutions to assist communities with the application process.

On Friday, the college community cut the ribbon on its new, accessible quad. It honors Madeline Snide, a 1978 graduate and the first paraplegic to enroll at the BCC who is credited for inspiring change on campus.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded $11 million to businesses as part of a strategic investment to retain and upskill talent within Massachusetts' workforce. Interprint was awarded $163,900 to train 171 workers; 50 additional jobs are expected by 2026. Awards have been awarded to 125 businesses statewide to date in 2024.
