Springside Pump Track Planners Want Time, City Commitment By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Planners of the Springside bike skills park would like more support from the city and more time but the Parks Commission is ready to see wheels moving.
They first came to the commission in 2020 looking to donate a pump track and bike skills park to Pittsfield, citing the plot behind Reid Middle School as a great spot for accessibility to the Morningside neighborhood.
In four years, the cost of asphalt alone has doubled. The 2021 design's cost is seeing a reported increase of about 50 percent, originally quoted for $400,000.
Recognizing the need to pivot, planners last month asked the commission for more time to re-evaluate the project and fundraise.

 FALMOUTH, Mass. — Paula Smith served her country in the Army for more than 20 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel. She grew up in Woods Hole, attended Falmouth Public Schools and pursued her undergraduate work at the University of Iowa. After briefly working for the Falmouth Enterprise, she applied (on a dare from a fellow colleague and after a drive through a Nor'easter to Western Mass to meet with the recruiter) to the Army's Baylor Graduate Program for Physical Therapy, one of 13 applicants chosen, and received her full commission as a second lieutenant. BOSTON — Governor Maura T. Healey nominated Frederick DeCubellis, Gregory Teran and Amanda Ward as Associate Justices to the District Court. The nominees will now be considered by the Governor's Council for confirmation.
"I'm proud to nominate these three highly experienced attorneys who will make excellent additions to the District Court," said Governor Healey. "We're grateful to the Governor's Council for their careful review of their nominations."

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pesticide treatment is not needed at Onota Lake as water testing continues to come up negative for zebra mussels.
Park, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath attributed the September detection to the shell of a dead zebra mussel that likely came through on a boat. At this time, the lake is not believed to have an infestation.
"What we think has happened is there was probably a boat that was launched at the boat ramp last summer, it probably had a dead zebra mussel shell on it, stuck to it, and when it launched right off the boat ramp that shell sort of fell off the boat and was sort of among the rocks off of the boat ramp," he

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is warning EZDriveMA customers of a text message-based scam, also known as smishing. The scammers are claiming to represent the tolling agency and requesting payment for unpaid tolls. The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads. Customers who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from EZDriveMA or another toll agency should not click on the link.  PITTSFIELD , Mass — A monster fifth inning led the Post 68 Juniors to a 4-0 win against North Adams Post 125 in American Legion baseball action on Saturday at Buddy Pellerin Field. Late in the game for Post 68, a rally started which led to their ultimate victory. A combination of hits from Derek Roy, David Wildgoose and, Ethan O’Donnell resulted in two of Post 68’s runs scored. On the bump, Gavin and Ethan O’Donnell combined for seven strikeouts. “Today was a hot one,” Ethan said, “Had to work consistently and get flyouts and groundouts.” And the pair combined to allow just three total hits.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Splash pads at the Common and Clapp Park were operational just in time for this week's summer heat wave. This comes after vandals stripped "major components" needed to operate the facilities during the winter. Both were switched on Tuesday morning.
"The major components of the splash pad were vandalized, so the copper was stripped out of the control rooms not only at the Common and Clapp Park, but also at Durant Park and some of the Little League fields," Park, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath told the Parks Commission that evening.
