Berkshire County Awarded Fair Share Funds

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll administration announced that it is delivering more than $13 million for 14 projects to support local transportation infrastructure and other needs.    The awards come from revenue generated by the Fair Share Amendment and are matching funds for projects and initiatives eligible for federal discretionary grants offered by the U.S. Department of Transportation.    In Berkshire County, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission will receive $49,649 to develop a safety action plan. Safety action plans use a data-based approach to improve roadway safety for all users.     These matching funds are part of a total of $476.5

'Summer of Water Safety' Includes Lifeguards at Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The District Attorney's Office kicked off a "summer of water safety" at Onota Lake during Tuesday's high temperatures.

At the same time, the city announced that lifeguards will return to the well-loved swimming spot.

"Today's weather cannot be any more suited for why we're gathered here today," DA Timothy Shugrue said. "On days like these, families, summer campers, boaters, and adults will most likely head to one of the beautiful Berkshires lakes to cool off."

Lanesborough Has Hot, Quiet Election Day

Voting was slow but steady at Lanesborough Town Hall. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The town had a steady and sweltering election day that saw Deborah Maynard elected to the Select Board.    Maynard outpolled Joseph Trybus 181-87 to fill the seat left vacant by longtime board member John Goerlach.   About halfway through polling hours, about 150 people had turned out in the 90-degree weather to cast votes for the Select Board, Finance Committee, Planning Board, library trustee, and town moderator. Post 68 Juniors Split Double-Header on Road

GREENFIELD, Mass. -- Jason Codey struck out 10 Tuesday to lead Pittsfield Post 68 Juniors to a 5-0 win in a double-header split against Greenfield Post 81 in American Legion Baseball action.   Codey scattered three hits and walked one in the complete-game, five-inning win.   Devin Reynolds and Gavin O'Donnell each doubled, and Simon Mele drove in a pair of runs in the win.   Post 81 came back to earn a 3-2 win in the nightcap.   Greenfield scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.   In the fourth, Connor Devine and Jack Farkas each drove in a run.   But Greenfield's Conner Bergeron came on in relief and retired two hitters

Pittsfield Girls Softball to Host New England Regional

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Pittsfield Girls Softball will host the New England Babe Ruth Regional Tournament at the Doyle Softball Complex from June 28 to June 30.   The tournament will feature 15 teams, including the Berkshire Force 12-and-under and 14-and-under travel squads. Update: Sumner Sentenced To Life In Prison

On Monday, June 17, Tyler Sumner was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for one count of murder in the first degree.
For one count of possession of ammunition without FID card, the defendant was sentenced to two years in the House of Corrections to be served concurrent with the one count of murder in the first degree.

BRPC Kicks Off Road Safety Action Plan with Public Information Sessions

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) federal funding program is bringing resources to Berkshire County to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on our roads, with the goal of reaching zero.

Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) is kicking off this effort under the banner of their STEPS Initiative: the Safe Travel and Equity Plan for our Streets, and will soon begin the data gathering process.

To help answer the question of how we prevent more people from experiencing traffic crashes in the future, BRPC is inviting residents of Berkshire County to share their experiences that might not be found in a statewide database.

Dalton Traffic Commission Advises on Senior Center Voting

DALTON, Mass. — The Traffic Commission will be sending the Select Board a letter with recommendations on ways to improve voting at the Senior Center.    During its meeting on Wednesday, Traffic Commission Chair William Drosehn informed everyone that the Select Board has requested they draft a letter about how voting at the Senior Center has been going thus far.    Last August, the Select Board voted to relocate the town's polling station to the Senior Center to improve accessibility for voters with mobility impairments.    There have been two elections at the new location so far: the primary and local elections. Heat Index Could Break 100 Degrees This Week

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The next few days are going to be a scorcher for New England.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a heat advisory from noon to Tuesday to 8 p.m. on Thursday.   Temperatures are expected in the low 90s but the high humidity could spike the heat index to 105 degrees.    Numerous agencies and meteorologists are offering guidance on staying cool and out of the sun. Two Contested Races in Lanesborough Election

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters will choose a new Select Board member through a contested race in Tuesday's town election.

Polls open at noon in the Town Hall community room and will close at 8 p.m.

Longtime Planning Board member Joseph Trybus and Deborah Maynard, also on the board, are running for the three-year term.

John Goerlach declined to run again after serving Lanesborough for 18 years, being first elected in 2006.

When prompted for closing words at the last meeting, Goerlach thanked the townspeople for their support and said it has been a pleasure to serve them.

Timothy Sorrell has another year on his term and Michael Murphy was re-elected last year for a three-year
