PITTSFIELD, Mass.— Berkshire County Head Start plans to demolish a Wahconah Street building and construct an early child-care facility near the people it serves. Last week the Historical Commission OK'd the demolition of 224 Wahconah St. The approval is contingent upon a letter of support from the owner, as the child-care agency is under contract and has not closed on the property yet. Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Hunter McCormick explained that this is in the beginning stages of a lengthy process because federal dollars will fund the project. PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The city has received $100,000 toward developing digital equity. On Tuesday, the City Council accepted a $99,972 Digital Equity Implementation Grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. It will expand public Wi-Fi to Durant Park, bring wayfinding for Wi-Fi to the downtown area, and fund a digital equity ambassador to get the word out to the community. Pittsfield is the first of 14 local communities to participate in the digital equity planning project through the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Chili's Grill and Bar has closed up shop and is looking for a new business to carry out its lease. Director of Northeast Operations Allen Anderson notified the Licensing Board of the intent on Monday, a month after a seemingly abrupt closure of the Berkshire Crossing location. "It's a relatively new building. It's a great opportunity for anybody that is interested," he said during the meeting broadcasted by Pittsfield Community Television. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Methuselah Bar and Lounge has been slapped with a weeklong liquor license suspension for the over-serving of patrons that preceded a stabbing. The Licensing Board came to the verdict on Monday after a show-cause hearing for its annual downtown all-alcohol license was continued twice. The suspension will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The establishment has seen consequences for numerous violations in the past including COVID-19 violations, overcrowding, violence and injury outside, and underage service. PITTSFIELD, Mass.— Health officials have worked to control cigarette smoking in the city but vaping poses a new problem for the younger generation. Last week, Tri-Town Health Department Director James Wilusz gave a tobacco control update to the Board of Health. As a father of a student, he reported that vaping is "rampant" in schools and happens in the bathroom like cigarette smoking did years ago. The local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness held its annual meeting at Zucchini's Restaurant on Wednesday. Between fundraising and sponsorships, the organization brought in nearly $91,700 in the last year and invested about $28,000 into its programs. The 40th anniversary also comes with change, as Paul Johansen was hired as the new executive director and the nonprofit moved to an office space at 141 North St., Suite 301 in downtown Pittsfield.
