DALTON, Mass. — An update to the Central Berkshire Regional School District's Regional Agreement that was thought to be uncontroversial has turned out not to be the case. The item failed during the Hinsdale annual town meeting on May 15 and the Peru town meeting on June 1. The regional agreement needed six out of the seven towns to vote in favor of passing. Hinsdale voted against the Regional Agreement draft because it wanted included in the agreement that the School Committee's decision on the voting method for incurring debt needs to be unanimous; not a two-thirds vote, Superintendent Leslie Blake-Davis said.  DALTON, Mass. — Aidan Garcia and Sarah Thornton have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the 2024 graduating class at Wahconah Regional High School. Both students will speak at graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The valedictory speech is titled, "Forever" and the salutatory address is "Reflections". Garcia is the son of Andrew and Susan Garcia of Dalton. During his high school career, he pursued an Honors and Advanced Placement curriculum. PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Jay Santangelo of Lenox was the top nonbinary runner at the Berkshire Pride 5K on Sunday. Santangelo covered the 5-kilometer course in 27 minutes, 14.53 seconds to place 16th overall among 94 finishers. Pittsfield's Cam LaFerriere was the overall winner in 22.45.72, a 7:19 mile pace. LaFerriere finished 24 seconds ahead of Canaan, N.Y.'s, Thomas Salaatte in second place (23:09.52). DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted Robert Bishop as chair and Dan Esko as vice chair during its meeting last week. The motion was made by Marc Strout and seconded by Bishop to nominate Esko as vice chair. Esko has been on the board for four years and has served as vice chair for one year thus far. He said later that he is feeling very positive about the future and is happy to continue serving as vice chair. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council has authorized the borrowing of $3 million for new boilers at Pittsfield High School — a project that was originally going to be funded by ARPA.
The nearly 100-year-old boilers are original to the building and have exceeded their useful life, officials say. They are converted locomotive engines that are extremely inefficient and expensive to maintain.
The replacement design was recently completed and a low bid was received. After looking at the numbers, it was clear that the allocated $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds would not be enough.

 The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says many people are having problems with bears looking for food near their homes, and with the food scrap ban in effect the department is providing tips for people who are composting at home so they can avoid attracting hungry bears. "We have been receiving lots of reports of bears on decks, tearing down bird feeders, wrecking beehives, killing chickens, and getting into trash, compost and garbage containers," said bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A 62-year-old New York State man was arraigned Friday for enticement of a child. David Stypa was arrested on Thursday and charged with enticement of a child younger than 16; two counts of disseminating obscene matter to a minor; and attempt to commit a crime. Stypa was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court in front of Judge Jennifer Tyne, who ordered he be held on $100,000 cash bail. The defendent was arrested following an investigation into his online communications with a minor and is alleged to have been in communication with the child over online platforms.
