 PITTSFILED, Mass. — There is a Jewish tradition of studying a single page of the Talmud every day until its completion. According to ta press release, this tradition is called Daf Yomi (Hebrew for "page of the day"). Because the Talmud is a multi-volume work of ancient law, narrative, and commentary, a full cycle of Daf Yomi takes about seven and a half years to complete. Jews from around the world who study the same page on the same day over this long period of time share a distinct sacred experience. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield Health Department announced a new program "A Matter of Balance", a nationally recognized evidence-based fall prevention course designed by Maine Health. This four-week program is scheduled to take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. at the Berkshire Athenaeum from March 4 to March 28. Participants are expected to attend both days, each week (a total of eight sessions) to complete the program. This program is designed for older adults who have concerns about falling and want to make changes to reduce the risks of falling. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A nearly $49,000 prior year payment for debris removal was approved by the City Council on Tuesday after it "slipped through the cracks." An order authorizing $48,820 for the Department of Public Services to pay Northern Tree Services for debris clearance and restoration work after a March 2023 storm was approved. "Although I would agree that there should be a purchase order I think there is an explanation behind why there was not," Mayor Peter Marchetti said. Charlie Catacalos, a newcomer to the Berkshires, grew up in Maryland near Washington, D.C. After attending Temple University in Philadelphia, they spent half a year working in cultural institutions in the Adirondacks. They eventually found their way to North Adams, where they have resided for the past two years. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A man has been charged for allegedly robbing the Beacon Cinema over the weekend. On Monday, Kyle Richard Wilbur, 32, was arraigned in Pittsfield District Court for Armed Robbery after being identified as the perpetrator of a robbery at the movie theater on Friday around 10:18 p.m. Police responded to a reported armed robbery at 57 North Street where a man claimed to have a weapon and demanded money from a staff member. After receiving the money, he reportedly fled the scene and was later located by law enforcement based on a provided description and direction of travel. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Tuesday the City Council will see requested funds for Department of Public Services work and an update on various street maintenance projects.
Mayor Peter Marchetti has requested to borrow $650,000.00 under the Sewer Enterprise Fund for the sewer main on Holmes Road and to pay a previous year's expense of almost $49,000 to the DPS following an "administrative oversight."
Marchetti reported that the replacement of the main is necessary to provide sewer access to properties currently without it.
"The approximately 700 feet extension includes installing two deep manholes and will provide sewer access to properties currently without it,"

New Faculty/Staff Sanah Fouz joins BCC as Assistant Professor of Nursing. She currently resides in her home town of Pittsfield. Fouz is a graduate of BCC and earned a bachelor's degree from College of Our Lady of the Elms. Most recently, she worked as a staff nurse at Berkshire Medical Center for nine years.
