PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Bernard Gerald McDonough, 82, of 108 East Housatonic Street, Apartment #7, Pittsfield, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on January 23, 1935, the son of the late Bernard C. and Catherine E. Hyland McDonough, he was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He enlisted with the United States Army National Guard on January 18, 1953, and served until April 6, 1961, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class.
Mr. McDonough was employed by Berkshire Gas Company where he worked in the Meter Shop. He retired in 1995 with 40 years service.
Mr. McDonough was a communicant of St. Mark Church. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus of which he had been a member since age 18. He was a member of the I.C.A.D. and on the Board of Director of Ad-Lib Center for Independent Living.
He enjoyed camping, taking bus tours, and attending the sporting events of his grandchildren.
Mr. McDonough leaves his wife, the former Elizabeth Heidel, whom he married August 22, 1959; his daughter, Kathleen Bauch of Ludlow; a son, Jim McDonough and his wife, Patty, of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, Alyssa Bauch, Alexander Bauch, Jerry McDonough and Connor McDonough; a stepbrother, Jack Passier and his wife, Vicki, of Pittsfield; a stepsister-in-law, Norah Passier of Rocky Hill, Conn.; and a cousin, Margaret Biron and her husband, Gilbert of Lee.
He was predeceased by a stepbrother, James Passier.
Funeral notice: Funeral services for Bernard G. McDonough will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. from Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church celebrated by Rev. David E. Aufiero, Administrator. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2017, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Church in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
