PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Maria (Sciarra) DiTomasso, 88, of Pittsfield passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility.
She was born in Bolognano, Province of Abruzzi, Italy, on February 13, 1929, a daughter of the late Mauro and Giovina (D'Angelo) Sciarra. Maria attended schools in Italy and came to Pittsfield in 1956. She was employed as a seamstress for a local coat factory and was for the most of her life primarily a homemaker.
Maria was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining family and friends, gardening and traveling to Italy and South America to visit family.
Survivors include her husband, Pietro DiTomasso Sr., whom she married on September 3, 1953; one brother, Antonio Sciarra of Italy; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; her sister-in-law, Delfina DiTomasso of Pittsfield; and her friend Deborah Gottung.
She was predeceased by her son, Pietro DiTomasso Jr., who died on September 18, 2009; and four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral notice: Services for Maria (Sciarra) DiTomasso will take place Friday, September 1, 2017, at 8 a.m. from the Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, Mass. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 414 North St., Pittsfield with the Rev. Monsignor Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor officiating.
Entombment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, August 31, 2017, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
