PITTSFIELD, Mass. — John Daniel Sondrini, 82, resident of Melbourne Place, died peacefully on July 3, 2018, at Hillcrest Commons surrounded by his children after a long illness.
John was born on November 23, 1935, in Pittsfield, Mass., to Marion Pettibone and Peter Sondrini. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1952. A veteran, John received honorable discharges from the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. He graduated from Holyoke Community College in 1972, and went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1975.
John was survived by his children, Joseph Sondrini (Michele) of Concord, North Carolina, Debra Guachione (Glenn), Diana Telladira, and Peter (Tracy) Sondrini, all of Pittsfield, and Geno Sondrini of Pittsfield and Joyce Sondrini of Cheshire; and 17 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Diana Sondrini (in 2007); and two sons, John and Jerry Sondrini.
John retired as a captain at the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Department, where he was employed for over 30 years, as the Vocational Educational Director. After retirement, John worked with his son Peter in his contracting business. John was an active member of the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Department. He was also a long time member of the Italian American Club of Pittsfield and the Onota Lake Fishing Club.
John enjoyed many things including fishing and taking care of his yard. John also loved spending time with his children and following his grandchildren.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to the dedicated staff at Hillcrest Commons for their special care over the past few years.
Funeral notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John D. Sondrini will be celebrated on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 196 Elm St., Pittsfield, with Reverend Fedoryshan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours. Anyone attending the funeral mass are asked to gather directly at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Care in the Berkshires in Care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm Street, Pittsfield MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
