PITTSFIELD, Mass. —
Charlotte J. Sutherland, 91, formerly of Anita Drive in Pittsfield, passed away July 5, 2021 at Berkshire Place surrounded by her four children.
Born in Pittsfield on September 10, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John and Jeanne Vernier Eberwein.
A 1947 graduate of Pittsfield High School, she went on to graduate from Skidmore College in 1951, and received her master’s degree from St. Rose College in Albany, NY. She was married to Leslie T. Sutherland, who predeceased her on March 2, 2007. Mrs. Sutherland was employed as a teacher for 9 years, having taught 5th grade in New York State.
Charlotte was a communicant of St. Mark Church where she sang in the choir. She also had been a communicant of Sacred Heart and the former St. Teresa Church and for many years directed the church choir and the bazaar at St. Teresa’s Church. She was on the board of the Western Mass Girl Scouts and the Pittsfield Girls Club. Over the years, she fostered troubled girls and was a blood donor for the American Red Cross. Mrs. Sutherland enjoyed photography, cross country skiing, tennis and playing violin in the Williamstown Symphony.
Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her son, David C. Sutherland of Pittsfield, daughters, Nancy J. Sutherland of Lenox, Ellen M. Sutherland and John Franzoni of North Adams, Joanne Sutherland Spence and Eric Spence of Pittsfield; her sister, Jeannine Rontowski and husband John of Oriskany, NY, and Lucille Eberwein of Pittsfield. Her grandchildren are Charlotte Lotz, Jeffrey Lotz, Alex Sutherland, Christian Sutherland, Jonathan Sutherland, Tonia Nicholas, David Nicholas III, Jared Nicholas, Max Spence and Charlie Spence, as well as five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her siblings, John Eberwein, Robert Eberwein, Mitzi Scelsi and Anita Manfredo.
Funeral Notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 9, 2021 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Fedoryshyn, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to either Kids 4 Harmony or to the Christian Center, all in care of the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff of Berkshire Place for their compassionate care.
