PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mr. Thomas "Smitty" Smith, of Pittsfield, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023, just shy of his 81st birthday. Born in Hinsdale, MA, on November 14, 1942, he was the son of the late Paul and Eleanor Russell Smith.
Smitty worked for the telephone company for the majority of his career. He was last employed by New England Telephone, from where he retired after 36 years of dedicated service.
When Tom wasn't at work, he kept (more than) busy volunteering his time and giving back to his community. To list all Smitty did for everybody would prove impossible, but many would know him for driving school and charter buses, as well as limos. He also helped keep his town, and those surrounding, clean and well-maintained. He was groundskeeper for the Hinsdale Cemetery, a laborer for the Hinsdale DPW, and on the maintenance department for Camp Romaca and Taconic.
Tom was a volunteer firefighter for both the Hinsdale and Dalton Departments and the Ambulance Crew as well.
Sports were always a passion of Smitty's. He was the coach for both boys and girls youth sports, such as hockey, baseball, softball, and football!
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, the former Honey Hover, whom he married on May 24, 1975. He leaves behind his daughters, Carol Rapisarda (Michael) , Trisha LaFleur (Jeff), and Rebecca Quail, as well as his sons, Matthew Smith (Teresa) and Marty Streit (Kelly). Smitty is survived by his grandchildren, Paul Smith and Breony Smith, Laiken Rapisarda and Dylan Rapisarda (Stephanie), Brandon Quail, Amanda Streit, Dominique Streit, Joshua LaFleur and Andrew LaFleur, as well as 6 dear great grandchildren and his brothers Richard Smith (Corrine) and Robert Smith (Jean).
