Marshall W. Torrey

Marshall W. Torrey, 82, of 160 Brighton Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Surry, Maine, on Dec. 2, 1920, son of Harry and Ethel Saunders Torrey, he attended schools there and was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and of Dexter Academy, both in Maine.

He served in the Army during World War II with both the 8th and 9th Army Air Forces. He was assigned to the 556th Bomber Squadron, known as the “Tiger Striped Marauder Group,” and received a unit citation, the Bronze Star Five Cluster and a French citation for being in the first group to cross Omaha Beach.

During the mid-1980s, he was instrumental in the restoration of the airplane he flew, “Shootin’ In,” a Martin B-26G Marauder, which is on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Torrey was employed by GE as a winder for 42 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners’ clubs.

He was a baseball and NASCAR fan and enjoyed camping, cars, playing cards and horseshoes, and listening to country music.

He and his wife, the former Helen Longstaff, were married July 7, 1942, in St. Martin’s Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Donald L. Torrey of Pittsfield and Bruce M. Torrey of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Barbara L. Contenta of Pittsfield; a brother, George Torrey of Franklin, Maine; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Marshall W. Torrey, 82, of Pittsfield, who died Aug. 10, 2003, will be conducted Wednesday at 9 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Mary Schreiber, senior missioner of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Aug. 12, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. He leaves five grandchildren, Lisa Duquette, Darin Torrey, Ryan and Melanie Contenta, and Philip Torrey, and four great-grandchildren, Torie and Ty Duquette, Bryanna McKearney and Ethan Torrey.

He was predeceased by another brother, Fred Torrey. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
