Margaret Carroll Ford

Margaret Carroll Ford, 81, of 89 South St., Berkshire Place, died there on Monday.

Born in Providence, R.I., on July 28, 1922, daughter of George N. and Hannah Roberts Ford, she came to Pittsfield as a young girl. She returned to Providence several years later and graduated from Hope High School.

She received her bachelor's degree from Notre Dame College in New York in 1947 and her master's degree from Columbia University in 1953.

A veteran of World War II, she served in the Women's Army Corps.

Miss Ford was employed as an administrative assistant to the executive director of nursing at the former Springfield Municipal Hospital division of Baystate Medical Center, retiring in 1977. From 1970 to 1973, she was a history teacher at Miss Hall's School.

Prior to that, she was assistant to the dean of women and director of the housing office of the University of Massachusetts, an assistant registrar and later registrar at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., from 1958 to 1964.

She also taught history in independent schools, including St. Jean's in New York and Riverdale (N.Y.) County School, where she was head of the Senior School.

In 1953, she returned to Pittsfield, where she was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Margaret Carroll Ford, age 81, died Jan. 12, 2004. The funeral will be on Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, with Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Michael Sheshanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

She is survived by a niece and a cousin.
