Helen S. Hess, 88, of 87 Fort Hill Ave. died Thursday at Hillcrest Commons.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Dec. 31, 1915, daughter of Howard and Ida Heck Sterling, she attended schools there.
She received her master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh.
She taught in Pittsfield schools and also taught elementary school in the Wilkes-Barre area.
A communicant of St. Mark's Church, she was a member of the Literacy Volunteers Program.
Her husband, George J. Hess Sr., whom she married June 17, 1951, in St. Charles' Church, died July 17, 1976.
She leaves her son, George J. Hess Jr. of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Helen S. Hess, who died Jan. 29, 2004, will be tomorrow at 10 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mark's Church, celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME from 9 until the time of the service on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
